In the comic
Asa first appears at a speakeasy located in the Hotel Maribel in "Cutthroat". It quickly becomes clear that Mordecai, Nico and Serafine are his underlings. Regarding Nico and Serafine, Asa several times uses phrases like, "we set about acquiring them", making it clear that Asa is in league with and possibly subordinate to a third party. Asa's agenda is unclear, though he tells Mordecai that Nico and Serafine's efficiency has allowed, "us to focus...on other ventures".
In "Vaudevillian", Mordecai and Asa discuss their agenda further, but Asa claims that he does not have any additional information for Mordecai; he is essentially a "messenger". They proceed to meet with Avril, one of the pig farmers, in Asa's office. After Avril describes the destruction of the pig farm by Rocky, and points out that Marigold has been using the farm to dispose of bodies but has not paid the farmers, Asa agrees to lend them, "some very indirect assistance".
Mitzi calls Asa in "Demurral", suggesting that Mordecai stole guns from Lackadaisy's storeroom and that Asa provided the pig farmers with the guns knowing that they were going to attack Lackadaisy. Asa claims not to have known that the pig farmers would be attacking Lackadaisy and proceeds to advise Mitzi to consider closing Lackadaisy "before someone gets hurt". Apparently uncomfortable talking over the phone, Asa ends the call after offering to treat Mitzi to lunch at the Mill. He proceeds to tell Mordecai, who is sitting in Asa's office, that he was hoping the pig farmers would deal with Lackadaisy, and tells Mordecai to accompany him to his meeting with Mitzi in order to, "help drive the point home".
In "Luncheon", Asa and Mordecai discuss their upcoming meeting with Mitzi prior to her arrival at the Bevo Mill, with Asa stating that it is "necessary" for him to meet with her, and advising Mordecai to avoid positions in management. In "Heartstrings", Asa and Mitzi converse, and he reiterates that he believes it would be in her best interests to step down from running Lackadaisy. Mitzi claims to be surprised by Asa's conduct; according to her he used to be nice to her. Asa acknowledges that he supplied the pig farmers with the weapons taken from Lackadaisy's storeroom, which Mordecai looted. According to Asa the disarmament was supposed to be a clue; the subsequent attack by the pig farmers was "happenstance". Mitzi further accuses Asa of infringing on Lackadaisy's trade routes; he responds that trade route agreements were made with Atlas, not Mitzi, and furthermore he is obeying the orders of his employer. In "Loggerheads", Asa claims that he warned Atlas that he was getting in over his head; this earns him a look from Mordecai, who excuses himself. Asa encourages Mitzi to stop trying to put things back the way they were, and offers to let her perform with Zib's band at Marigold. Mitzi responds that she would rather take the risk than see Lackadaisy wilt away, and takes her leave after noting that Asa seems troubled.
Apperance and personality
Asa tends to come across affably. He dresses well but casually, perhaps to put those he is dealing with at ease while maintaining some formality. He has described himself as a night manager to Mordecai, noting that with regards to their current agenda it means little more than messenger.
Asa has stated that he uses jokes to cheer himself up.
Mitzi refers to Asa as an "old friend" in "Portraiture". "Heartstrings" establishes that while Asa and Atlas were business rivals, they also cooperated with regards to trade routes for their alcohol. Said agreements do not apply to Mitzi.
Mitzi and Asa are on a first-name basis, as established in "Demurral". While Mitzi previously described Asa as an "old friend", Asa appears to be somewhat dismissive of her, advising her during a phonecall to consider closing Lackadaisy "before someone gets hurt", and talking over her during the discussion. He later tells Mordecai he does not have time to deal with her. Despite Asa's interest in driving Mitzi out of business, he claims that he does not want her hurt and is trying to look out for her. Mitzi notes that Asa "used to be" nice to her.
As of "Cutthroat", Mordecai is subordinate to Asa. He is apparently not a new employee, though of late he has been working with Nico and Serafine a great deal. In "Vaudevillian", Asa refers to Mordecai as his shadow. When Mordecai asks Asa for more information regarding their agenda, Asa claims that he does not know any more than Mordecai does. Asa is also surprised that Mordecai fell for "the hatchet joke", implying that he was not aware that Mordecai was not from the St. Louis area.
Nico and Serafine
As of "Cutthroat", Nico and Serafine are both in Asa's employ. He tells Mordecai that, "we dredged them out of the bayous", where they had been working for a small bootlegging operation. Asa and his associates consequently hired them and they have proven very efficient.
